As an Academy parent, it is heartbreaking for me to imagine Barbara and Albert Simms reading Mr. Hibbett’s superb letter, if they were alive.

They were such generous people, and their vision of a fine school in a state so badly in need of excellent education was so inspired.

And now we see their generosity so badly managed that it is worth less than a third of what it should be. And the beautiful promise of the Academy’s mission can no longer be kept.

Trustees, it is never too late. Please, take Mr. Hibbet’s letter seriously. It is a road map for a better future. You owe it to Barbara and Albert Simms, and the school they built.

Albert and Barbara are living in Santa Fe at age 97.

I think the Simms would understand. Most institutions go through hard times, and often due to mismanagement. Let’s work together and not let the Academy of vison and hope slip away.

Personally, I trust the Academy to survive, evolve, and prosper. Local demand is strong, great teachers, students, and perhaps the need to review, reflect on school history, governance, and make necessary changes to once again make it Albuquerque’s academy with diverse faculty, students, appropriate class size, and only the necessary administrative services. Other than relying on idealistic low paid teachers, a great school over time requires: well-paid teachers, low teacher-student ratio, able to enroll a diverse student body regardeless of family finances, dynamic administration that serves student and faculty needs first.

Thanks for the correction, Trust the Will. That’s great news about the Simms.

I agree with your suggestion, “Let’s work together.” It’s absolutely the right idea.

But that’s impossible when Mr. Honegger refuses to address any of the issues in Mr. Hibbett’s letter. It was prepared so carefully, with everything backed up from its source.

Mr. Hibbett and his parent group have clearly spent many hours writing their letter. Another blogger wrote that it is a “labor of love.” I couldn’t agree more.

I think that Mr. Honegger has a duty to honor the work of Mr. Hibbett’s group and respond. That would truly be “working together.”
