    Concerned donor

The underlying theme seems to be that Mr. Watson is the “issue.” If his disregard for open communication from faculty and staff is that of a self righteous power monger, the board should begin looking for his replacement. The school cannot function in a positive fashion if Mr. Watson is creating a disrespectful and distrustful atmosphere.
In truth, parents don’t send their kids to Academy because of Mr. Watson. They send them because of the awesome teachers and the programs those teachers pour their hearts into. The teachers, coaches, and staff go above and beyond to insure that Academy students succeed. They create the environment of trust, excellence, and love.

      Not Surprised

Not sure what I said could be deemed abusive given all I said were facts. I’m an alum and have discontinued donations because of the very climate detailed herein and perpetuated by Watson. [removed by administrator] It’s a fact this info has been concealed.

To Not Surprised: We are hoping to keep the focus of the conversation on problems that are unique to Academy and that we can fix. The redacted portions of your comments have concerned items that do not meet these criteria and that are more in the nature of personal attacks. That said, you have voiced valid concerns and we hope to improve the school culture all around.

          To just wondering

Concern and disagreement is not great antagonism. I have heard more and more issues from many parents over the years, but many feel there aren’t better choices. Why not make our own school better? The problem is when those in charge don’t want to hear anything but agreement. I feel extremely bad that faculty are basically told to leave when they raise issues, but can’t say I’m surprised. I have felt the same when raising issues with Me. Watson; concerns are definitely NOT appreciated. And I have seen this attitude trickle down to by some faculty lately (though very few). They know/believe they have a captive audience. Just know, if you do have an issue with something at the Academy, and youre not a big donor or otherwise connected, Mr. Watson will disregard your concerns and you will become persona non grata. Yes, this was relayed to the Board through the survey. So, we suck it up for the sake of our kids.

Well said, “To just wondering.” Mr. Watson long ago decided he could run the Academy like his own fiefdom. But this is not entirely his fault. The Board should have evaluated him regularly, and failed to do so.

History teaches that unaccountable power ALWAYS leads to trouble.

Trustees, please do not make this mistake with Mr. Watson’s successor.

              Former Parent

In regards to being open to meetings: I recall Mr. Watson getting up and walking out on a group of concerned parents with whom he was meeting last year in order to meet with a senior for his exit interview. Why schedule two meetings simultaneously? Was it an escape tactic? Or was it just rude?

In regards to private meetings: That was an utter waste of time. Teacher concerns were ignored. Parent concerns have been ignored. Yes, when the Multi-cultural Parents Association pushed two years ago, the school finally agreed to interview and hire someone to take over Josie Herrera’s position. It took a letter to the Board such as this one to make that happen. The person who was hired was the one least likely to succeed, in spite of excellent credentials. Additionally, I have no idea how much support she was given to actually succeed in her position…but I digress.

I thank Mr. Hibbett for devoting so much time to interviewing people in the community and putting this web-package together for all of us who are too cowed, too scared, or too frustrated by past attempts to try to discuss a variety of issues and concerns with Mr. Watson, Mr. Honneger, Mrs. Lipkowitz. Today’s faculty tells me that too often their concerns have been met with reprisals or punishments. Today’s parents tell me that their concerns have been met with comments like, “Thank you very much, we’ll see what we can do,” (if that).

Finally, if sending out school-related or e-mails regarding the health of the school without blinding the recipients email addresses is an offense, I can share with you a long list of emails coming from aa.edu mailboxes that could be subject to whatever punitive action Mr. Honneger is hinting at.
