Dear Academy Community,
I am an alumna and I want to share a wonderful document with you all. It’s the speech given by Former Academy Headmaster Ashby Harper. He gave it at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Academy campus. The date was May 15, 1965.
You can find the speech at this website, at the bottom of “our principal concerns” tab.
Please read it when you get a chance. It will inspire you and make you feel good about a great man, Mr. Albert G. Simms, and his dream for Albuquerque Academy. It will also make you admire Mr. Harper. He saw dangers that have been exposed by Mr. Hibbett’s letter.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Mr. Harper and the current situation at the Academy. And I have two requests.
To Academy parents: Please read Mr. Harper’s advice to you carefully. Then take Mr. Hibbett’s letter seriously, and ask the trustees to do the same.
To Academy trustees: Please read Mr. Harper’s speech now, and every time you meet. And then pause for a minute or two in silence to reflect on what he said.
Like Mr. Simms, Mr. Harper was a great man: wise, humble, and selfless.
If the Academy’s trustees and administration follow Mr. Harper’s example, then we will find our way forward to a better future.
Sincerely,
A grateful alumna
